There's a New Food Pyramid. Now What?

Published on: 4th February, 2026

Have you noticed that our food pyramid looks a little different? With the FDA’s 2026 release of the updated food pyramid and dietary guidelines, Jenn is here to unpack why these changes matter and what they might mean for your health and your plate.

In this episode, host and health coach, Jenn Trepeck breaks down the controversial new dietary guidelines released by the FDA in 2026. From the seemingly dramatic increase in protein and dairy intake recommendations to her concerns about food quantity versus quality, what do these changes mean for us on an individual level or for our families? Jenn also discusses the massive implications for millions of Americans that rely on federal nutrition programs such as school lunch programs, SNAP benefits, the WIC program, and military meals. With the slogan “Make America Healthy Again” Jenn breaks down the resources to discern whether these new guidelines are based on evidence-based research or meat and dairy industry influence. Remember, nutrition is nuanced and individualized, there is not a “one-size-fits-all” dietary plan.

What You Will Learn in This Episode:

✅ Why the new dietary guidelines impact millions of Americans through federal nutrition programs, including the school lunch program, SNAP benefits, and the WIC program, and how these changes will affect meal planning for the most vulnerable populations

✅ The controversial shift in protein recommendations from 0.8 to 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram, and why this increase raises questions about evidence-based nutrition versus food industry influence

✅ The critical difference between public health recommendations and individual health needs, and why understanding this distinction is essential for making informed nutrition education decisions

✅ How the removal of the health equity lens and emphasis on red meat consumption without addressing food quality concerns demonstrates the challenge of creating truly comprehensive nutrition standards

The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast, hosted by Jenn Trepeck, explores real-life wellness and weight-loss topics, debunking myths, misinformation, and flawed science surrounding nutrition and the food industry. Let’s dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.

TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 Federal nutrition programs, why dietary guidelines feed students with varied nutrients from different food groups

01:48 New nutrition guidelines and the confusion that comes with the updated food pyramid

07:41 Why these dietary guidelines matter for military food assistance, school meals, and other federal nutrition programs

11:19 Statistics reveal 6.7 million on WIC, 41.7 million on SNAP benefits, and 30 million students receive school lunch nationwide

15:39 Breaking down the upside-down food pyramid showing meat and dairy at the top, vegetables and fruit in the middle, and whole grains at the bottom

21:26 Discussion on food industry funding and which beef, pork, and dairy associations paid dietary guideline committee members

24:15 Protein recommendations increase without any mention of food quality or emphasizing plant protein sources like legumes and beans

30:27 The recommendation of three servings of dairy per day ignores lactose intolerance and possible health impacts of dairy

32:53 Only three servings of vegetables recommended per day equals the same amount as dairy servings

36:18 Saturated fat capped at 10% creates a puzzle when combined with increased red meat consumption without quality considerations

41:15: Whole grains recommendation of two to four servings a day

44:01 Bottom line recommendations from the new guidelines assessment

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

💎 The new dietary guidelines directly impact over 80 million Americans through federal nutrition programs, making compliance essential for school lunch program reimbursement and nutrition assistance funding

💎 Nutrition is nuanced and individualized, with food access, environmental factors, and personal health outcomes varying significantly across populations, yet one-size-fits-all dietary patterns remain problematic

💎 The dramatic increase in protein recommendations lacks consensus among nutrition science experts and ignores existing data showing most Americans already exceed previous minimums for protein intake

💎 The removal of health equity considerations and emphasis on quantity over food quality raises concerns about the food industry's influence on supposedly evidence-based nutrition policy

“My passion for nutrition and helping others stems from “kicking my food issues” with my own weight management saga.” ~ Jenn

I believe that the greatest accountability is paying it forward! That’s why I teach the nutrition education we are all supposed to know but no one ever taught us, along with the science behind food, fitness, and health.

After I graduated from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, I founded Better Life Now LLC while working full-time in hedge funds. In 2019, I took my practice from side-hustle to full-time self-employment and launched my podcast, Salad With a Side of Fries. On the show, we offer science-based tips and tricks for how to achieve wellness and weight loss for real life – because who wants a life without fries or dessert?!

Topics we tackle on the podcast include debunking fad diets, food myths, misinformation in marketing, bad science, and general nutrition. I encourage guests whose expertise is different from my own focus on weight management to bring their unique, fact-based perspectives to talk about subjects they are educated in and passionate about.

Due to my decade-long experience of working with clients, I have gained insight into the health and food industry and the how-tos of building a business.

Some specific health and wellness topics I can speak to include debunking fad diets, exposing the BS we are fed by the food and diet industry, how the people around us can positively and negatively impact our health journey, and shifting mindsets in order to overcome inappropriate barometers of success to instead achieve happy, healthy, and meaningful change.

On the subject of business, I can help you by teaching my critical pieces every entrepreneur should know, how to make your side-hustle into your full-time job, ways to sustainably achieve success without burning out, contemporary networking, and how to prioritize wellness while pursuing your projects.

When I find some free time, I’m typically working out at Physique57, discovering hidden gem restaurants in NYC, or traveling to spend time with friends and family.

I’d love to have an in-depth conversation with you, whether it’s leveling up in business or debunking food myths!
